March 14, 2014
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -
After 18 holes at the Seminole Intercollegiate, Penn State men's golf stands tied-for-eighth with Winthrop, shooting a 301 on the Southwood Golf Course.
Due to potential bad weather in the Tallahassee area, the tournament has been cut to two days and the 13-team field will play the remaining 36 holes entirely on Saturday, March 15.
Only three strokes separate the Nittany Lions' starting lineup. Going into what will now be the final day of play, sophomore JD Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.) leads the Blue and White with a score of 74 and sits tied-for-24th. Junior Jens Talbert (Little Rock, Ark.) is tied-for-34th with a 75, while junior Xander McDonald-Smith (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) and freshman Christian Elliott (Port Perry, Ontario) shot a pair of 76's on the day and are tied-for-41st.
Mercer holds a five-stroke team lead going into Saturday as well as the player lead with Trey Rule's first round low of 69. Round two will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
