Penn State Men's Golf Places Seventh at St. Croix Collegiate Classic

St. Croix, Virgin Islands, March 8, 2003 - The Penn State Men's Golf team, led by senior Ted Neville's (Oklahoma City, OK) 12th place performance (76-74-71=221) and junior Mark Leon's (75-73-76=224) 19th place showing, finished in seventh place among the 14-team field at the St. Croix Collegiate Classic over the weekend.

Neville fired one of three Nittany Lion sub-par rounds at the Par 72 course, as he shot a 1-under 71 in the tournament's third round. Greg Pieczynski (Kingston, Pa.) shot a 1-under 71 in the second round, and sophomore teammate Marco Poccia (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) scored a third-round 69 to register the other two Nittany Lion sub-par rounds. Pieczynski (77-71-78=226) and Poccia (78-79-69=226) finished in a 26th-place tie overall, freshman Jason Pannone (East Greenwich, R.I.) in 43rd with a 74-78-77=229 and David Dankmyer, competing individually, shot a 82-81-82=245 for a 73rd place finish. Penn State shot a combined 302-296-293=891 to finish 13 strokes back of tournament winner Fresno State (292-297-289=878).

Indiana (290-294-295=879) finished in second place and Ohio State in third (293-296-291=879), while North Carolina-Wilmington (297-290-297=884) and Xavier (291-305-295=887) rounded out the top five team scores.

Penn State's final round 293 was third among the 14 schools as it jumped the University of Rhode Island on the final day for its final seventh place finish.

Penn State finished fourth in Par-3 scoring (+17) and third in Par-4 scoring (+25). Ted Neville and Mark Leon each shot a combined +1 on the tournament's par three's to finish third among individual scorers.
