UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men’s golf team returns to the sunshine state to compete in the Big Ten Conference’s annual match play championships in Palm Coast, Florida, Friday-Saturday, Feb. 9-10.
Each Big Ten team is represented in the event and will send out six golfers to compete in the individual matches.
The Big Ten is split into two divisions, East and West, and teams will play three matches against teams within their division. At the conclusion of the divisional matches, the teams will be reseeded and will face off the corresponding team from the opposite division. The Nittany Lions hold the No. 2 seed in the conference and No. 1 in the East Division based off GolfStat rankings from Nov. 21, 2017.
The Nittany Lions will spend Friday, Feb. 9 on the par 72, 7,183-yard Conservatory Course and take on Indiana in the morning and Rutgers in the afternoon. On Saturday, Penn State will move over to the par 72, 7,113-yard Ocean Course to face Michigan State before playing the fourth and final match on Saturday afternoon.
Five of Penn State’s six 2017 Big Ten Match Play representatives will compete in the 2018 event with senior Cole Miller (New Tripoli, Pa.), juniors Charles Huntzinger (Duluth, Ga.) and Ryan Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.), sophomores Alec Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) and Ryan Davis (Berkeley Heights, N.J.). Freshman Daniel Martinez (Austin, Texas) makes his first appearance in this event and third overall for the Nittany Lions.
Huntzinger led the Nittany Lions over West Virginia to retain the Athletic Director’s Trophy on Sunday, Feb. 4, with a 3-under 69 to give Penn State its third consecutive event win dating back to the fall.
Penn State finished second to Northwestern in the 2017 Big Ten Match Play Championship after defeating Purdue and Iowa.
