UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - After closing out the fall season with back-to-back tournament titles, the Penn State men's golf team starts the spring season Sunday, Feb. 4 at Athletic Director's Trophy event in Kissimmee, Florida. The Nittany Lions look to defend the trophy versus West Virginia at the Reunion Resort as the two programs battle for the second-straight year.
Each team will send out six competitors on the 7,154-yard, par 72 Tom Watson-designed course with the first grouping teeing off at 8:30 a.m. ET. The top five scores from each team will count towards the team total to determine which squad claims the trophy.
"We get into high gear quickly playing for the Athletic Director's Trophy against the ever-improving Mountaineers," said Penn State men's golf coach Greg Nye. "Our team will use this weekend to be primed for the Big Ten competition next week."
Representing the Nittany Lions will be senior Cole Miller (New Tripoli, Pa.), juniors Charles Huntzinger (Duluth, Ga.) and Ryan Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.), sophomores Alec Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) and Ryan Davis (Berkeley Heights, N.J.), and freshman Daniel Martinez (Austin, Texas).
Huntzinger posted a team-best scoring average in the fall with a 70.25 and Miller followed close behind with a 71.25 in four events.
After a nearly 40-year hiatus, the Nittany Lions reclaimed the trophy a year ago, defeating the Mountaineers by nine strokes. Miller was the low-man in the event, carding an even-par 72, while Huntzinger followed in second place with a 73.
"We had some good competition last year and I expect the same again," said Nye.
