Greg Nye Named NCAA District II Coach Of The Year For 1999-2000

State College, Pa.- Penn State men's golf coach Greg Nye was honored as the NCAA Division I Coach of the Year for District II at the Golf Coaches Association of America National Convention held in Orlando January 23-26. NCAA District II encompasses schools in the states of New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia.

In 1999-2000, Coach Nye's Nittany Lions qualified for the program's eleventh-straight NCAA tournament appearance after going undefeated in District II play for the third time in the last ten years. Overall, the Nittany Lions won three tournaments in 1999-2000, taking first place at the Navy Invitational, James Madison Invitational and Rutherford Intercollegiate. The team was led by junior Matt Abbott, who was named All-Big Ten and District II Player of the Year.

The Lions also performed well in the classroom throughout 1999-2000 as seven of 11 team members were named Academic All-Big Ten. The team included a GCAA Academic All-American and a GTE Academic All-American.

Overall, Nye has won 35 championships during his nine-year tenure in Happy Valley. He was previously awarded District II Coach of the Year honors in 1993 and 1994. Nye has coached 17 NCAA All-District II team players, two All-Big Ten selections and an NCAA All-American.
