Aug. 31, 2008
Farmington, Pa - The Penn State men's golf team shot an opening round of 12-over par to sit at third in the 12-team field. The team is hosting its annual Rutherford Intercollegiate with this year's events taking place at Nemacolin Woods in Farmington, Pa.
Penn State finished the round with a score of 300, behind Miami (Ohio) and Purdue. Miami finished its round at +1 (289) to take the lead, while Purdue sits in second shooting a ten over par (298).
"We are going to have a team meeting tonight to make some game-management decisions and changes for the next few days," said Penn State head coach Greg Nye.
Penn State sophomore Tommy McDonagh (Wilton, Conn.), shot a 71 to tie in third with Miami's Nathan Sutherland in the individual rankings. His score helped the Nittany Lions keep a solid position for the remaining of the tournament. Aaron Crist of Miami leads the tournament with a 69, followed by Nakarintra Ratanakul of Purdue, who shot two-under par (insert score).
"Everyone, including Tommy could have played better," said Nye, "but good thing he stepped up and played the way he did. He made a brilliant birdie on 12 and his birdie on 15 was outstanding."
Junior Kevin Foley (Sommerville, N.J.) fired an opening round of three over par, tying for 14th along with junior Jim Markovitz (Bridgville, PA). Senior Matt Leon (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) finished at seven-over par to tie for 44th and junior T.J. Howe (Osceola, Pa.) stands at 10 over par, tying for 56th.
Round two of the Rutherford Intercollegiate will begin tomorrow morning at 7:30 followed by round three on Tuesday.
