UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State's Big Ten Conference opener against Illinois will be a split national telecast on ABC. The sold out clash is set for an 8 p.m. kickoff in Beaver Stadium on Sept. 27. ABC will air the game to most of the nation.
Penn State improved to 3-0 with a 55-13 thumping of Syracuse last Saturday, moving to No. 15 in the USA Today Coaches poll and No. 16 in the Associated Press poll. Illinois (2-1) defeated Louisiana-Lafayette, 20-17, last week, and is No. 22 in the AP poll and 23rd in the USA Today survey. The Fighting Illini are idle this week.
Penn State leads the series with the Illini, 12-3, but the hosts won, 27-20, last year in Champaign.
The contest with the Fighting Illini is one of three Penn State games that will be played in primetime this season. The Nittany Lions' Oct. 11 contest at No. 8 Wisconsin will kick at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT and air on ESPN or ESPN2. Penn State's Oct. 25 clash at No. 13 Ohio State also will kick at 8 p.m. and air on ABC, ESPN or ESPN2.
Starting their 16th season of Big Ten competition, the Nittany Lions have appeared on television in 167 of their last 169 games. This Saturday's 12 p.m. home game with Temple will air on the Big Ten Network.
The kick times and TV for eight Penn State games were announced prior to the season. Future Penn State contests may be selected by the networks under the six and 12-day provisions of their contracts with the Big Ten.
