Nittany Lions Ranked No. 17 in Associated Press Preseason Poll

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - With the season opener just two weeks away, the Penn State football team will begin the campaign ranked No. 17 in the Associated Press poll.
The Nittany Lions, who are ranked No. 18 in the USA Today/Coaches poll, will clash with a trio of Top 15 teams during the upcoming campaign. Penn State is ranked No. 13 by ESPN and No. 14 by Sports Illustrated in their preseason polls.
The Nittany Lions have been ranked in the AP preseason poll 35 times during Joe Paterno's 42 seasons as head coach. Penn State has been ranked in the final Top 25 a total of 32 times during Paterno's Hall of Fame career. Last season, Penn State finished 9-4 and was ranked No. 24 in the final Associated Press poll and No. 25 by USA Today/Coaches.
Penn State will face six teams that played in bowl games last season, three of whom are ranked in the Associated Press Top 15: Michigan (5), Wisconsin (7) and Ohio State (11). The Nittany Lions also will face Notre Dame and Purdue, who received votes in the AP survey.
Paterno's 42nd Nittany Lion team returns 15 starters and 32 letterwinners for the 2007 season, which launches with "Penn State Football Eve, presented by Sheetz" on Friday, August 31 in Beaver Stadium. Stadium gates will open at 6:00 p.m. and festivities inside the stadium begin at 7:30 p.m. for the free event.
The Nittany Lions are concluding their second week of practice in preparation for the Sept. 1 season opener with Florida International in Beaver Stadium. The contest will kick off at 12:00 p.m. and will be featured on the opening weekend of football telecasts on the Big Ten Network, which launches on August 30.
The Big Ten Network also will televise Penn State's Sept. 15 home game with Buffalo (12:00 p.m.) and at least one conference game this season.
