A Letter from Fran Ganter to the State College and Penn State Communities

On behalf of our entire family, I want to express my deep gratitude to the State College community for the support and the concern that has been extended to the Ganter boys and to me upon the death of my wife, Karen.

My four sons have been surrounded almost continuously by friends, teammates, neighbors and coaches. The outpouring of affection for their mother has given them both comfort and courage. I am so grateful. The Penn State community, the Penn State athletic department, the thoughtful friends and our dear and generous neighbors have been here for all of us in this most difficult hour of our lives. People have come quietly with flowers to distract us from our grief, with hot meals to feed our spirit and with tears and hugs to share our sorrow. They have made generous donations in Karen¡¯s memory to provide for a State College High scholarship. Karen was such a dedicated Little Lions fan. They honor her with their giving.

Being surrounded by so many of you at Our Lady of Victory Church and at the cemetery softened the pain of the final moments. We needed you, and you were there.

State College was the only hometown that Karen ever wanted. She shared its values and counted on it to watch out for her boys. She was so happy to raise her family in the shadow of our beloved alma mater. Karen believed that State College was kind, caring and honorable. You have proven her right once again.

Fran Ganter
