Five Additional Nittany Lion Football Games To Be Televised

Times Set For Seven Games

STATE COLLEGE, Pa., May 16, 2000 -- Five additional Penn State football games will be televised this fall, bringing the total of announced start times to seven for the 2000 season.

The Nittany Lions' second home game, Sept. 9 against Louisiana Tech, will be televised by ESPN Regional and kickoff at 12:10 p.m. Stations carrying the contest are to be announced.

Penn State begins its eighth season of Big Ten Conference play at Ohio State on Sept. 23 and ABC will televise the game either at 12:00 or 3:30 p.m. from Columbus, Ohio.

Illinois provides the opposition for Penn State's 81st Homecoming game on Oct. 21. The contest will begin at 12:10 p.m. with television to be determined.

On Oct. 28, the Lions will battle Indiana at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. Kickoff is 6:00 p.m. EST (7:00 EDT) for the espn2 national telecast. Penn State will be playing its first regular season night game since facing Rutgers at Giants Stadium in 1995.

Penn State closes the regular season Nov. 18, hosting Michigan State at 3:30 p.m. EST on ABC. The winner of the traditional season ending game earns the Land Grant Trophy.

Previously announced were Penn State's clash with Southern California in the Kickoff Classic (Aug. 27 - 2:30, ABC) and the Sept. 16 contest at Pittsburgh, which will be a CBS split national telecast at 3:30 p.m. from Three Rivers Stadium.

The Nittany Lions have appeared on television 68 times in their last 69 games, including the last 35. Penn State has won 54 of its 68 television appearances over the past six seasons. The Nittany Lions have made 187 appearances on national networks under Coach Joe Paterno and own an overall record of 128-58-1 in those games.

Other Penn State contests may be selected by the networks under the six and 12-day provisions of their contracts with the Big Ten

Penn State posted a 10-3 record last year, gaining its 24th Top 15 finish (27th in Top 20) under Paterno, earning the No. 11 ranking in the final Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN Coaches polls. The Lions return 32 letterwinners and nine starters for the 2000 season, in addition to 12 players with starting experience.
