Brian Norwood is in his seventh season coaching the Nittany Lion safeties. His efforts have been instrumental in the development of Anthony Scirrotto, Calvin Lowry, Shawn Mayer and Yaacov Yisrael, all of whom have earned All-Big Ten honors since 2002. Scirrotto and Lowry tied for the Big Ten lead in interceptions in 2006 and'04, respectively. Lowry is a member of the Tennessee Titans and Mayer led the Big Ten in tackles in `02 and played for the Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots. Norwood joined the staff in 2001 after serving as defensive backs coach at Texas Tech. He helped develop first-team All-Big 12 safety Kevin Curtis in 2000. Born in Portsmouth, Va., Norwood matriculated to the University of Hawaii, where he lettered at cornerback and free safety from 1984-87. After earning his degree in 1988, he briefly played with the Canadian Football League's Calgary Stampeders and began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Arizona in 1990-91. He also has coached at Richmond (1992-94) and the U.S. Naval Academy (1995-99). At Navy, he guided second-team All-American Sean Andrews, who tied for the most interceptions in the nation with eight in 1995. A son, Jordan, is a junior wide receiver for Penn State. Another son, Gabe, was the sixth man on George Mason's 2006 Final Four basketball team.
