The graduation of all four secondary starters from 2011 and a couple of injuries provided Jeff Cully with an opportunity to see critical repetitions during the first several practices last spring. But, then the injury bug hit Cully, as he suffered a broken thumb and did not play in the Blue-White game. He will resume his bid for time in the secondary rotation when training camp opens in August. A civil engineering student, he has a cumulative grade-point average above 3.0 and is on schedule to graduate in May. Cully is among 16 returning Nittany Lions from Western Pennsylvania.
Cully's hard work and improvement did not result in any playing time in a secondary that featured four senior starters.
Cully was a two-time team captain for Coach Jacque Demattio at Hampton High School. As a junior, he passed for 891 yards and six touchdowns. He also was a baseball team captain and played lacrosse.
