Fencers Open Dual Season Perfect at NUY
State College, Pa. D December 3, 2000 D The Penn State men?s and women?s fencing teams opened up dual match action at New York University Saturday. In action that ended late Saturday night, both the men?s and women?s teams posted perfect 4-0 records.
The Lady Lions opened with wins over Rutgers (22-5), Princeton (17-10), North Carolina (23-4) and host New York University (24-3). The men?s team downed Rutgers (18-9), Princeton (15-12), North Carolina (20-7) and NYU (21-6). Outstanding performances for the women include Charlotte Walker and Colleen Hicks, who went 7-1 and 8-2 in the foil, respectively. Jessica Burke was a perfect 7-0 in the Epee and Beth Shelley was 6-0. For Shelley, the perfect performance was particularly sweet as she is graduating at the end of this term. Austin O?Neill went 11-1 in the saber. On the men?s side, Nonpat Panchan, a freshman, went 11-1 in foil while Daniel Landgren went 10-0 in the epee. Captain Michael Takagi was 9-3 in the Saber. Penn State will be back in action with individuals competing at the NAC Open on Dec. 8-10.
