Carla Esteva Selected to GTE Academic All-America Team
STATE COLLEGE, Pa., April 24, 2000 - Penn State fencer Carla Esteva (Mexico City, Mexico) has been named to the GTE Academic All-America At-Large Team for fall and winter sports, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Esteva, a four-time All-American, was selected to the women's second team. She maintains a 3.72 grade point average in industrial engineering. Players nominated for GTE Academic All-America consideration must have a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key reserve. The two-time captain of the Penn State women's fencing team, Esteva played a vital role in Penn State's last four NCAA Championships. She compiled a 176-20 (89.8%) dual-meet record in her collegiate career and competed in the World Championships, the World University Games and the Pan American Games while at Penn State. With its latest honoree, Penn State has had 41 GTE Academic All-Americans in the past six years, including six during the 1999-2000 academic year.
