Ten members of the Penn State men's and women's fencing teams will compete in the Junior Olympics this weekend at the Cleveland Convention Center. The women's squad will send seven fencers to the event with the hopes of scoring points toward a selection to the U.S. Junior National Team. Freshmen Case Szarwark (Nashville, Tenn.) and Sophia Hiss (Oklahoma City, Okla.) will be competing in their fourth national tournament this season. Both of the young stars have notched top-16 finishes in previous national events. Fellow freshmen Tamara Najm (Morristown, N.J.), Kimberly Gerriets (Davis, Calif.), Laura Hillstrom (Gaithersburg, Md.), and Jennifer Paulson (Guilford, Conn.) will compete in the event as well. Junior Andrea Wine (Rocky River, Ohio), who just made the age cut-off, will also vie for points this weekend. Freshman Ian Farr (Portland, Ore.) is the most prominent member of the men's team competing this weekend, with three national tournaments, including a ninth-place finish and a top-16 effort, already under his belt. He will be joined by classmates Ian Hamilton (New York, N.Y.) and Paul Jagielski (Guilford, Conn.) in Cleveland this weekend.
