Penn State Men's and Women's Fencers Successful at Olympic Trials: Day 3




Louisville, Ky.- January 18, 2009: After a break from competition for several weeks, Penn State Men's and Women's fencing come out of the third day at the Olympic Trials with impressive victories. Freshman Monica Aksamit (Matawan, N.J.) took first in women's Saber.

Freshman Nina Westman (Kalmar, Sweden) tied for third in the Junior Division with Princeton's Susannah Scanlan in women's epee.

Men's epee included Penn State's Captain James Moody (Denver, Colo.) coming in 9th out of 245 participants. Maxwell Dettlinger, (Louisville, Ky.) Oliver Valdes, (Southlake, Texas) and Samuel Larsen all placed within top 200.

In men's foil, freshman Miles Chamley-Watson (Philadelphia, Pa.) took sixth place out of 188 participants. Freshman Michael El-Saleh (Houston, Texas) came in 20th place. Janos Gasparin (Grapevine, Texas) was also tied for a top 100 spot. Finally, in men's saber Christopher Cheney (White Bluff, Tenn.) placed 9th in the Junior Division.

Penn State fencers at Olympic trials will continue duals until tomorrow and the team will travel to Princeton next weekend.
