Weekly Fencing Preview
The Penn State men's and women's fencing teams will return to action this weekend after a month-long break for the holiday season. Over the next two weeks, the teams will send a total of six fencers to the Convention Center in San Jose, Calif., to compete in the U.S. Olympic Trial/North American Cup Open. This weekend's portion of the event, which runs from Jan. 10-12, will feature the men's and women's saber and the men's epee. Sophomore Marten Zagunis (Beaverton, Ore.) and freshman Ian Farr (Portland, Ore.) will represent the Nittany Lions in the men's saber this weekend. At last month's U.S. Olympic Trials in Palm Springs, Calif., Zagunis put together and excellent performance to finish in ninth place. Three-time All-American Heather Brosnan (Portland, Ore.)will also travel to California this weekend to compete in the women's saber. All three of the Oregon natives will attempt to score points toward selection to the U.S. National Team.
