10th Annual Coaches Vs. Cancer Tournament Raises A Record $100,000-plus
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., June 16, 2006 - Penn State men's basketball coach Ed DeChellis greeted a field of 63 groups and more than 300 golfers Friday as the 10th Annual Coaches Vs. Cancer Celebrity Golf Tournament teed off at the Penn State Blue and White Courses. The largest field in the history of the tournament, sponsored by Sheetz, Inc., enjoyed a beautiful 84-degree day and perfect conditions while raising a record of $100,000-plus for the American Cancer Society.
The total raised by the Penn State CVC Tournament was $20,000 more than last year and more than six times the total of $16,000 raised in the first year of the tournament. Including funds raised from other events throughout the year and those of Penn State's CVC student group, the total contribution is expected to exceed $150,000 this year. This year's total brings the total funds raised in the 10 years of the Penn State CVC chapter to more than $700,000. Numerous sports celebrities and Nittany Lion head coaches took part in the play, including several former Nittany Lion basketball standouts. Among them were: Bruce Blake, Rahsaan Carlton, Mark DuMars, Dan Earl, Ed Fogell, Tom Hovasse, Curtis Johnson, Pete Lisicky, Glenn Sekunda, Tyler Smith and many more. DeChellis was named the national Coaches Vs. Cancer Man-of-the-Year earlier this month for his perseverance in overcoming cancer and work with Penn State's CVC tournament and in the community to help the victims of the disease.
