UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State men’s basketball coach Patrick Chambers announced today the addition of Kevin Freeman to the Nittany Lion coaching staff. Freeman matriculates to Penn State as assistant coach after spending seven years as the director of basketball administration with the University of Connecticut men’s basketball program.

“Penn State men’s basketball took another step in getting better today,” said Chambers. “We welcome Kevin and are excited about the impact he will have on our program. He is a proven winner as a collegiate player, professional player and as part of the staff at UConn. Kevin has built great relationships throughout the East Coast and nationally and he understands the vision we have for Penn State basketball and the goals we have for the future.”

A member of the staffs for UConn’s 2014 NCAA Championship and 2016 American Athletic Conference title, the Springfield, Massachusetts, native held responsibilities for UConn’s basketball operations, including NCAA compliance, travel and practice schedules. Freeman also was the liaison between the program, campus administration and campus community as well as the director of basketball camps.

Freeman joined the UConn program as assistant director of basketball administration in 2011-12 after an 11-year professional basketball career that included a tenure with Venezuela during its three championships, as well as clubs in Italy, Australia, Greece, South Korea, China, Puerto Rico and Spain.

Following a lauded prep career at Paterson Catholic (N.J.) High School, Freeman was a multi-year starting forward for UConn as the Huskies advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight in 1998 and posted a 34-2 record en route to their first national championship in 1999.

Named the Most Outstanding Player of the 1999 Big East Championship, Freeman also earned a spot on the 1999 NCAA West Regional All-Tournament team and the 2000 UConn Scholar Athlete of the Year award.

The Husky co-captain finished his career sixth on the UConn all-time rebounding list with 913 boards and 12th on the career scoring list with 1,476 points.

Freeman, and his wife, Nicole, are the parents of a daughter, Kekoa, and two sons, Sire and Legend.
