UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; June 1, 2010 - Penn State coach Ed DeChellis will welcome nearly 350 golfers, sponsors and celebrities to the Penn State Blue and White golf courses Friday as the 14th Annual Coaches vs. Cancer Celebrity Golf Tournament hits the fairways and greens to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
In his eighth year leading the Penn State CVC, DeChellis has overseen the development of a year-around program that has raised more than $175,000 each of the last three years and will look to surpass $1.5 million in total funds raised since its inception in 1996. Behind the longtime support of lead sponsor Sheetz, Inc., the Celebrity Golf Tournament kicks off another full season of events, which include a Reverse Car Drawing, Student 5k Fun Run/Walk, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament and CVC Day at the Bryce Jordan Center among other events.
More than 65 groups and celebrities will participate in four flights on both courses on Friday as the 5-man, 18-hole scramble gets underway. The 14th Annual event kicks off Thursday night with a catered gala event at the Bryce Jordan Center, which features a live and silent auction (items listed below). Among the notable celebrities that will play in the event are 1,000-point Nittany Lion scorers Joe Crispin (2nd all-time), Jarrett Stephens (9th all-time), Titus Ivory (10th all-time), Dan Earl (15th all-time) and Mark Dumars (19th all-time), Nittany Lion football All-Americans Lydell Mitchell and Keith Conlin, Penn State coaches Tom Bradley, Jay Paterno, Russ Rose and Char Morett, former Nittany Lion head coach Bruce Parkhill and his brother Barry (an All-American at Virginia) and Big Ten Network studio host Dave Revsine.
Penn State CVC is the eighth highest fund raiser among Coaches vs. Cancer organizations nationally and sixth among single universities. The top 15 CVC organizations nationally raised a nearly $3.5 million combined last year. Penn State's CVC organization supports the American Cancer Society, but also keeps a large portion of funds for use in supporting cancer-affected locals through the Bob Perks Cancer Assistance Fund (BCAF). Penn State Coaches vs. Cancer helped support more than 25 members of the local community that utilized the Hope Lodge at Hershey Medical Center last year as well as contributed support from helping to pay gas bills to providing medical supplies to aiding with mortgage payments.

Turned Wood Vessel by Bob Martin - A truly one of a kind piece because of the process involved. Turners of green wood like Bob Martin turn fresh timber straight from the log, without any previous processing. The wood is still living and growing. The wood retains its moisture and must be turned in quick order before it dries. As the wood dries, it shrinks, deforms, discolors and splits, all of which can happen at any stage in the turning process. These attributes of drying wood are accepted and expected in turning green bowls.
