UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Five-time NBA Champion Ron Harper will tee it up alongside host Patrick Chambers with one lucky foursome at the 18th Annual Coaches vs. Cancer Golf Tournament, Friday, May 30, at the Penn State Blue and White Golf Courses. The pairing is among more than 300 golfers and 60 groups participating in the tournament which stands as the flagship event for a year-round CVC-Penn State program.Last year, CVC-Penn State topped the $2 million mark in fundraising since its inception in 1996.
Chambers and Harper will be auctioned off as part of the Thursday night Sponsor/Captain Reception with the pair joining the highest bidder's foursome for his or her tee time Friday. Harper played 15 NBA seasons with four teams and was a part of five league championships with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers.
Six additional Penn State head coaches - Josh Brandwene (women's hockey), Missy Doherty (women's lacrosse), Greg Nye (men's golf), Mark Pavlik (men's volleyball), Jeff Thompson (women's gymnastics) and Bob Warming (men's soccer) -- will join Chambers on the list of nearly 60 team captains. More than 20 former Penn State basketball and football players, in addition to former coaches Jerry Dunn and Bruce Parkhill, are also among team leaders.
About the CVC-Penn State Golf Tournament
The Coaches vs. Cancer Golf Tournament, hosted by Chambers, has become one of the most anticipated golf events in central Pennsylvania annually hosting more than 300 golfers, sponsors and regional sports luminaries in flights taking place on both Penn State golf courses. The five-man, 18-hole scramble tournament is just part of the activities that include a gala Sponsors/Captain Reception, featuring high-end hors d'oeuvres, open beverage service and live music, and a post-tournament awards dinner at the Mount Nittany Club at Beaver Stadium.
Other CVC-Penn State Programs
The annual golf tournament is just part of a year-round program which has several events coming up on the calendar including the State College Brew Expo (Aug. 16 at Tussey Mountain), NInth Annual CVC Reverse Car Drawing (Sept. 18 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park), Coaches vs. Cancer "Band Together" Day (TBA at Nittany Lion home game) and the 16th Annual CVC 5K Fun Run/Walk (TBA, PSU campus). CVC-Penn State has raised over $200,000 in each of the last four years en route to topping the $2 million mark at the close of 2012-13 events.
