March 16, 2012
UNIVERSITY PARK, PA.; MARCH 16, 2012 - An early spring heat wave will make for beautiful conditions Saturday with sunny skies and temperatures predicted in the mid 70's for the annual Coaches vs. Cancer 5K Fun Run/Walk through the Penn State campus. Hundreds of runners, walkers and families are expected to participate in the event, with all proceeds benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer-Penn State.
Runners and walkers will begin the course in front of the Penn State Intramural Building on Curtin Road at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 17. Participants can register on sight or go to cvcpsu.com to register in advance. It is $15 to participate ($18 for a timed race), which includes a T-shirt to the first 200 participants, an all-you-can-eat Spaghetti Dinner Friday night (March 16), and an extensive selection of refreshments following the race. The event is organized by the CVC-Penn State student organization.
The loop through the blooming Penn State campus will take participants past Beaver Stadium on Curtin Road then right on Porter Road past Lubrano Park before looping back toward campus on Hastings Road. Participants will run past the Lasch Football building on Hastings before connecting to East Pollock Road to run through the Penn State campus past such landmarks as the Millennium Science Complex, The HUB and Old Main before turning right onto Burrowes Street to run past West Halls, the IST Building and Rec Hall. The route then turns back onto Curtin Road for a home stretch past the Paterno Library, Palmer Art Museum, Pavilion Theatre and Penn State Creamery.
Led by Nittany Lion basketball coach Patrick Chambers, CVC-Penn State aims to eclipse $2 million raised in its 17th year. The organization has grown from an annual golf tournament started in the summer of 1996 to a year-round schedule of events, which includes the Spikes Fest, CVC 5k Fun Run/Walk, the Coaches Vs. Cancer Celebrity Golf Tournament (June 1), Brewer's Expo, the CVC Reverse Car Drawing, Bestwick Foundation Bike For Life and CVC "Band Together" Day. CVC-Penn State ranked as the sixth highest fundraiser among Coaches vs. Cancer organizations nationally in 2011, raising more than $200,000 for the second-straight year, and has ranked among the top 10 for more than a decade.
Much of CVC-Penn State funds are donated directly to the American Cancer Society, the largest non-profit funder of cancer research with over $30 million in research taking place in Pennsylvania each year, including three research grants totaling over $2.1 million at Penn State University. Some of the money raised also goes directly to assist those affected by the disease in the Centre Region through the Bob Perks Fund (BPF), with more than $190,000 contributed in the last six years.
