ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) _ LaVell Blanchard scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds as Michigan beat Penn State 65-58 Saturday, to surpass last season's conference win total and match the 10 wins the Wolverines had last year.

Chris Young had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Michigan (10-11, 5-6 Big), which outscored Penn State (6-15, 2-9) by 11 over the final eight minutes. Bernard Robinson scored 13 and Leon Jones added 10 for the Wolverines.

Penn State's Sharif Chambliss scored 19, Brandon Watkins had 13 and Tyler Smith added 10. The Nittany Lions have lost seven of eight.

Michigan's first-year coach Tommy Amaker continued to tinker with his starting lineup by starting freshman Chuck Bailey and walk-on Herb Gibson in place of his top two scorers, Blanchard and Robinson.

There were nine ties in the first half. Penn State, which trailed by as much as five, led 32-30 at halftime. Watkins scored 11 and Young had 10 after 20 minutes.

Following a couple more ties, Penn State went ahead 36-34 about five minutes into the second half and didn't give up the lead until the Wolverines led 54-53 with 5:10 left, their first lead in nearly 18 minutes.

After the 13th tie of the game, Blanchard's layup with four minutes left gave Michigan the lead for good.
