Penn State held Maryland scoreless in the final 2:24 of the first half to take a 41-35 lead into the break.
Four of five Nittany Lions starters scored in double figures (Carr (16), Reaves (14), Stevens (25), and Watkins (11)). Penn State is 6-1 when four players score in double figures.
This is the latest that Penn State has been over .500 in the Big Ten since the 2008-09 season when the Nittany Lions defeated Minnesota on February 14, 2009, to improve to 7-6 in conference play.
Penn State is now 7-0 this season when Lamar Stevens is the team’s leading scorer.
Penn State capitalized on mistakes scoring 23 points off turnovers and allowing only 13.
Penn State controlled the paint, winning the scoring battle inside, 32-22.
The Nittany Lions’ 17th win is the second-earliest in terms of the date that Penn State has reached 17 wins in a season in its Big Ten era. The earliest came in the 2008-09 season when the Nittany Lions reached 17 wins on February 1.
This is the second-earliest in terms of the date that the Nittany Lions recorded their seventh Big Ten win with the earliest coming on a February 3 win in the 1995-96 season with a win over Iowa.
This is just the ninth time in 26 seasons that Penn State has recorded at least seven Big Ten wins.
Nittany Lions Individual Notes
Lamar Stevens recorded his 13th career 20-point game with 25 points, tied a career-high in 3-point field goals with two and set a career high in minutes played in a regulation game, seeing the floor for 40 minutes.
Mike Watkins recorded a career high in steals with three.
Josh Reaves grabbed a Big Ten career-high nine rebounds.
Tony Carr matched his career high in 3-pointers made with four.
Satchel Pierce saw action for the first time since the January 15 game against Minnesota.
Penn State is now 10-13 all-time against the Terrapins and 8-2 in University Park, Pa.
All six of the Big Ten games between Penn State and Maryland have been decided by six points or less. Tonight's game was a four-point margin and the Feb. 14, 2015 game was a three-point contest. The other four were six-point games.
The home team has won each of the last four games in the series.
