Nittany Lions Fine-Tuning Skills in College Baseball Summer Leagues

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (June 27, 2005) - The Penn State baseball team is well represented among the many college baseball summer leagues across the country. Fourteen Nittany Lions are currently playing in summer leagues from Pennsylvania to Texas to Arizona.

Here is a complete list of Penn State baseball players competing in summer leagues.

Senior LHP Alan Stidfole (New Bloomfield, Pa.) and sophomore RHP Gary Amato (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) are playing for the Lake Havasu Heat in Havasu, Ariz.

Stidfole is currently 3-1 with a 3.00 ERA, 32 strikeouts and 7 walks in 24.0 innings of work. He is averaging 12 strikeouts per game for the Heat, who are 27-5 overall, and 13-3 in the Pacific Southwest League.

Amato is 3-0 with a 1.99 ERA, 27 strikeouts and 9 walks in 22.2 innings.

Junior LHP Craig Clark (Phoenixville, Pa.) is pitching for the Peninsula Pilots of the Coastal Plain League. He is 1-2 with a 3.00 ERA, 14 strikeouts, and 9 walks in 24.0 innings. He has made five appearances, starting in four of them.

Sophomore outfielder Brian Ernst (Boyertown, Pa.), junior second baseman Jim Leitgeb (Elkton, Md.) and senior outfielder Lance Thompson (Brisbin, Pa.) are playing for the Winchester (Va.) Royals, a Valley League team.

Ernst leads the Royals with a .322 batting average and 9 stolen bases in 14 attempts. He has 1 home run and 9 RBI, and he has started in 23 of the 25 games he has seen action.

Leitgeb has started in 25 of 26 games. He is hitting .220 with a double, 2 triples, 9 RBI and 6 stolen bases.

Thompson joined the team late after attending classes at Penn State during the first summer session. He has started in 10 of 11 games, while collecting a .409 batting average with 7 doubles and 4 RBI.

Sophomore shortstop/RHP Scott Gaffney (Westbury, N.Y.) and junior utility-man Matt Cavagnaro (Brightwaters, N.Y.) are playing for the McKinney Marshalls in the Texas Collegiate League.

Gaffney is hitting .288 with a double and 7 RBI. On the mound, Gaffney is 0-0 with a 0.82 ERA and 7 strikeouts in 11.0 innings of work.

Cavagnaro is batting .278 with 1 home run and a team-leading 15 RBI while playing mainly second base. Cavagnaro's play has earned him a starting spot on the Texas Collegiate League Tris Speaker Division All-Star team.

Sophomore catcher Joe Blackburn (Sinking Spring, Pa.), sophomore RHP Travis Garrett (Transfer, Pa.), senior catcher Aaron Greenfield (Villanova, Pa.), sophomore RHP Paul Hawkins (Glen Hope, Pa.), sophomore catcher James Spinelli (Berwyn, Pa.), and sophomore catcher Mark Wojtowicz (Catawissa, Pa.) are also among Penn State players participating in college baseball summer leagues around the region.
