State College, Pa. - June 30, 2000 - Penn State Nittany Lion baseball standout Michael Campo has signed a free agent contract with the Anaheim Angels of Major League Baseball.
Campo, the Big Ten Player of the Year, signed the deal yesterday and has been assigned to Anaheim's Rookie League team in Butte, Montana. Campo was a first team All-American, an Academic All-Big Ten pick and a first team All-Big Ten player in addition to his conference P.O.Y. honors. He posted the nation's longest hitting streak this year with a 41-game effort. He ended the year with a superb .425 batting average, 83 runs scored, 48 runs batted in and six home runs. "There is justice in the world," Nittany Lion head baseball coach Joe Hindelang said. "It could not have happened to a more deserving player. Now Michael has his opportunity in professional baseball. The door is open now and I am extremely happy for him." Penn State posted a school-record 45 wins in this year's 45-19 campaign. Penn State won one of the NCAA Regional Championships and a berth in the school's first-ever NCAA Super Regional. In a related note, the Allentown Ambassadors, an independent professional team, have picked up former Nittany Lion Dan Goebler. Goebler made his debut last weekend.
