LURAY, Va. - Penn State pitcher Neal Herring (West Chester, Pa.), who is playing for the Luray Wranglers this summer, was named Valley League Pitcher of the Week on Monday following a sensational week which included 11.0 scoreless innings. After tossing five one-hit innings in relief last Monday (June 21), he threw six scoreless frames in a 7-0 victory on Sunday.
Herring went 1-0 on the week while striking out 11. He entered in relief on Monday and threw five dazzling innings against the Waynesboro Generals to keep the Wranglers close. He allowed only two baserunners via a hit and walk.
Then on Sunday, he shut down the New Market Rebels, allowing only four hits while striking out five over six innings of work. Luray cruised to a 7-0 win.

The Valley League was formed in 1923 and became an NCAA-sanctioned league in 1961. Although the NCAA no longer has direct involvement with summer leagues, the league still operates under NCAA rules. The league adopted wooden bats in 1993.
The VBL is funded in part by a grant from Major League Baseball and is a member of the National Alliance of College Summer Baseball, a national affiliation of summer leagues. The league has produced well over 1,000 professional baseball players, including a record 79 former players drafted in the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
