Chris Netwall Named Second Team All-Mideast Region
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Recently graduated Penn State catcher Chris Netwall (Allentown, Pa.) was named to the All-Mideast Region second team. Netwall, who was selected in the 13th round by the St. Louis Cardinals in this year's Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, was recognized as one of the top defensive catchers in the Big Ten after throwing out 29-of-59 (49%) attempted base stealers during his senior campaign. Offensively, Netwall registered a .302 batting average along with six home runs and 29 RBI during the 2001 season. The All-Big Ten choice ended his career as one of Penn State's all-time leaders in home runs (34/2nd), hits (214/3rd) and RBI (137/3rd). Netwall was recognized as the Nittany Lions' most valuable player during the 2001 season. In addition, Netwall was honored with third-team Verizon Academic All-America status while maintaining a 3.27 grade point average in mechanical engineering. Netwall is the third Nittany Lion in the last two seasons to be named All-Mideast Region. Former Nittany Lions Michael Campo and Shawn Fagan were honored with first-team all-region status following the 2000 campaign. Netwall is currently playing for the New Jersey Cardinals (Class A) of the New York-Penn League.
