UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (June 8, 2005) - Penn State assistant baseball coach Jon Ramsey has announced his resignation, effective June 30, to pursue other interests, head coach Robbie Wine announced Wednesday. Ramsey, his wife Melissa, and newborn son Jacob, will move to Louisiana, where Melissa has accepted a job with the Baton Rouge Soccer Club. Melissa will coach youth teams, recreational events, and help with different activities within the club. Melissa, a former Penn State women's soccer assistant coach, is a native of Baton Rouge, La. Jon Ramsey, an assistant coach for eight years, seven under former head coach Joe Hindelang, and one under current head coach Robbie Wine, will pursue other coaching opportunities in baseball. "I'm very thankful to Joe Hindelang for giving me an opportunity to coach at the Division I level," Ramsey said. "Penn State has been a wonderful place to work, and the Penn State family has been tremendous for me and my family. I feel Robbie Wine has the program heading in the right direction. This has been a tough decision, but it is the right decision for my family at this time." The search for a new assistant will begin immediately. "Jon Ramsey has been a big part of Penn State baseball for eight years, and we're going to miss him," said Wine, who just finished his first year as head coach of the Nittany Lions. "He helped tremendously in my transition here. I understood the situation that he was in with a new coaching staff, and with some of the unanswered questions that go along with that. But he fit in very well, and the coaching chemistry was good at the end of the year. He was coming back to coach next year, but his decision is what is the best for him and his family. We wish the Ramsey's the best of luck." While an assistant coach, Ramsey helped in coaching Penn State's offense to numerous team and individual records. During the 2000 Super Regional season, the Nittany Lions led NCAA Division I teams in team batting average for the regular season with a .358 average. Ramsey coached seven position players who were selected in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, including 13th-round picks Shawn Fagan (Toronto, 2000), Chris Netwall (St. Louis, 2001) and Rod Perry (Philadelphia, 2001). Ramsey graduated from Slippery Rock University in 1993, with a Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education, with a minor in American History. While at Slippery Rock, Ramsey was a member of the 1989 team that won the North Atlantic Region, qualifying for the Division II College World Series.
