Penn State's Wes Reohr Named NCBWA District I Player Of The Year

STATE COLLEGE, Pa., June 7, 2002 - Penn State junior center fielder Wes Reohr (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association District I Player of the Year after compiling a break-through season in 2002. Reohr became the second Nittany Lion to in history to garner the honor as Michael Campo was recognized after a stellar 2000 season.

Reohr became a regular in the Coach Joe Hindelang's lineup after a hand injury sidelined Zack Smithlin (Fair Lawn, N.J.). Reohr seized the opportunity and never looked back, as he became a mainstay in center field for the Nittany Lions. Reohr led the squad this past season boasting a .393 average, which was fifth in the Big Ten Conference, and nine home runs. His team-leading 75 hits ranks third all-time in single season base knocks at Penn State and was good for a seventh place tie in the league play.

The Ed Drapcho Award winner, which is given to the team's most improved player, finished second on the club this past season in doubles (11), RBI (38), and runs scored (49). Reohr also was the team leader in multi-hit games with 25 and multi-RBI games with 12. His season-high performance came on April 16 where he belted a pair of homers going 2-for-4 with a double, four RBI, while scoring two more runs in Penn State's 10-7 loss at Maryland. He also strung together a pair of four-hit contests going 4-for-4 in Penn State's 10-7 win over Navy and also going 4-for-5 in Penn State's thrilling 14-9 win at Indiana.

Penn State finished the 2002 season with a 23-30 mark and an 11-19 record in the Big Ten Conference.
