Four Penn State Players, One Signee Selected in Draft

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.--Four Penn State players and a Nittany Lion signee were among the players selected in the 50 rounds of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

The Toronto Blue Jays selected Shawn Fagan on Monday. The Levittown, N.Y., native was the 18th pick of the 13th round and 388th overall selection. The 5-11 185-pound senior hit .377 with 72 runs, 80 RBIs, 15 home runs.

Junior Scott Russo (Turnerville, N.J.) was selected by the Montreal Expos in the 26th round. The left-handed pitcher was the 765th overall selection and fifth in the round. Russo had a 4.25 ERA and posted a 4-1 record with a team-leading six saves in 24 appearances.

The Colorado Rockies made Chris Netwall (Allentown, Pa.) their seventh pick of the 32nd round. The junior catcher was the 947th overall selection after hitting .347 with 44 runs, nine home runs and 41 RBIs.

Senior Eric Spadt (Northampton, Pa.) was selected by the Cincinnati Reds as the 20th pick of the 45th round and the 1,341st overall selection. He hit .317 with 11 home runs, 16 doubles and 49 RBIs to cap off his Penn State career.

Also selected as the 1,164th overall selection was Penn State signee Matt Harter (Centre Hall, Pa.) of Penns Valley Area High School. The high school senior, who committed to PSU in November, was the 14th pick of the 39th round by the Baltimore Orioles.
