The official groundbreaking ceremony for Medlar Field at Lubrano Park was held on March 18, 2005. The future site of the brand new 6,000 seat ballpark will serve as home to the Penn State baseball team, as well as a new Class-A New York-Penn League franchise-owned and operated by the Altoona Curve.

Among the dignitaries who participated in the groundbreaking ceremonies, included Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell, who presented a check to the Center for Business and Industry of Centre County (CBICC) in the amount of $12 million toward the project.

Also participating in the ceremonies, were Curve President and Managing Partner Chuck Greenberg, State Senate President Robert C. Jubelirer, State Senator Jake Corman, Penn State President Dr. Graham Spanier, and Penn State Director of Athletics Tim Curley.

The new ballpark will be located on the Penn State University campus, along Porter and Curtin Roads, and across from the southeast corner of Beaver Stadium, the home of the Penn State football team. The ballpark will offer a breath-taking view of Mount Nittany, and the surrounding landscape of Central Pennsylvania.

The ballpark plans include a variety of seating options for up to 6,000 spectators, along with Penn State coaches' offices, minor league administrative offices, and clubhouses for Penn State, the New York-Penn League team, and visiting teams. The project will also include 502 new paved parking spaces along Porter Road, and existing parking at the Bryce Jordan Center and Beaver Stadium will be used to support the new ballpark.

Construction will be completed by June 2006 - in time for the start of the New York-Penn League season. Penn State will move into the new ballpark in the spring of 2007.

A gift by Anthony Lubrano, a 1982 Penn State graduate and President of A.P. Lubrano & Co. Inc. in honor of Charles Medlar, a former football trainer and baseball coach at Penn State, comprises a portion of the funds provided by Penn State University in the construction of the new facility.

The actual moving of dirt to level the eventual playing field began on June 9, 2005.
