UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (May 24, 2005) - Juniors Sean Stidfole (New Bloomfield, Pa.) and Alan Stidfole (New Bloomfield, Pa.), and freshman Scott Gaffney, were honored by the conference office on Tuesday, as they were named to the all-Big Ten Teams for their efforts during the 2005 baseball season. Sean Stidfole was named to the all-Big Ten second team as a starting pitcher for the second straight season, while Alan Stidfole made his first appearance on the third team as a starting pitcher. Gaffney was named to the third team as a third baseman. Senior Clint Eury (Butler, Pa.) was also honored by being named as a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree. Illinois' Richard "Itch" Jones was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year, while his outfielder Drew Davidson was named the Big Ten Player of the Year. Michigan's Jim Brauer picked up the Pitcher of the Year award, and Michigan State's Ryan Sontag was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Sean Stidfole tied his twin brother, Alan, for the team lead in wins with six this season. He finished 6-3 with a 3.89 ERA, and a conference-best 87 strikeouts in 90.1 innings. He had three complete games in a league-high 14 starts. Alan Stidfole was 6-4 with a 4.58 ERA, and a career-high 74 strikeouts in 78.2 innings. He led the team with three shutouts, and he had two complete games in 13 starts. Gaffney worked his way into the starting lineup at third base after injuries sidelined Eury (first base). He made 35 starts in 37 games as a true freshman. He hit .258, scored 18 runs, had four doubles, one home run and 16 RBI. He walked seven times and stole five bases. He also saw action on the mound, pitching in 10 games as a reliever. He went 1-2 with 12 strikeouts and a 4.05 ERA in 13.1 innings. Eury played first base in the first 14 games of the season before breaking his right hand when he was hit by a pitch in a game at James Madison. The southpaw continued to pitch despite the broken hand, a re-fracture of the same bone later in the year. He finished his Nittany Lion career as the all-time saves leader with 15 saves. He went 2-3 this season with five saves, 25 strikeouts and a 3.54 ERA in 20.1 innings. He ended the season with a 12.1 scoreless innings streak.
