Penn State's Mike DeRenzo and Mike Watson Named to All-Big Ten Squads
STATE COLLEGE, Pa., May 21, 2002 ¨C Penn State junior second baseman Mike DeRenzo (Murrysville, Pa.) and senior pitcher Mike Watson (Altoona, Pa.) were named as All-Big Ten third team selections, Big Ten Conference officials announced Tuesday.
DeRenzo earned third team honors for the second consecutive season after recording a .355 average including nine doubles, four homers and 30 RBI. DeRenzo, who put together the longest hitting streak in the Big Ten this season (23 games), also ranked among the leaders in the conference in hits, ranking seventh overall with 72 base knocks. Watson garners third team status after registering a 6-4 record with a team-low 3.95 ERA. The senior right-hander fanned 88 batters, which was good for fourth in the Big Ten, in 82.0 innings of work as the no. 1 starter for the Nittany Lions. Watson ends a stellar career with an overall record of 18-8 and ranks third all-time in Penn State history with 64 career appearances. DeRenzo and WatsonĄ¯s All-Big Ten recognition marks the 38th and 39th players all-time at Penn State to earn such honors. Penn State ended the 2002 campaign with an overall record of 23-30 and a Big Ten mark of 11-19.
