Buckeyes Top Nittany Lions 3-0 in Game Two
Columbus, Ohio ¨C Seth Whitehill pitched very well for his fifth straight start, allowing just seven hits and three runs, but he was outdueled by Ohio State¡¯s Jake Hale, who threw a complete-game shutout as Ohio State won the second game of Saturday¡¯s doubleheader 3-0. Penn State was limited to just three hits by the right-hander, who struck out six and walked four. Relief pitcher Matt Ogrodnik set a school record by making his 28th appearance of the year, breaking the old record of 27 appearances in a season that was previously held by Jeff Emerich in 1995. The Buckeyes struck first in the bottom of the third, taking a 2-0 lead of Ronnie Bourquin¡¯s two-run home run to right center with one out, one of the few mistakes Whitehill made on the afternoon. Bourquin¡¯s blast came after Eric Fryer¡¯s double. Jedidiah Stephen then singled and went all the way to third on a throwing error, but Whitehill worked his way of the jam by striking out the next two hitters to end the inning. Ohio State then scored an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with two outs. Wes Schirtzinger dumped a bloop single into short center field. Justin Miller then drew a walk. With lefty Jonathan Zizzo due up, Penn State head coach Robbie Wine elected to bring in left-handed throwing Matt Ogrodnik for his record-setting appearance. Ogrodnik got a ground ball off the bat of pinch-hitter Adam Schneider, a righty, but it snuck through the hole on the right side. Rick Marlin¡¯s throw home was a strong one but Schirtzinger slid in ahead of it for a 3-0 OSU lead. The Nittany Lions had eight baserunners in the game and in five of the seven innings, but Hale did not allow any runners to get past second base. Their best chance to score was in the sixth, as runners were on first and second with one out after a single by Scott Gummo and Aaron Greenfield was hit by a pitch. But Hale got the last two outs on a pop fly and a fly ball. Matt Cavagnaro, Gummo, and James Spinelli collected the hits for the Nittany Lions. Whitehill struck out five and walked three and fell to 2-3 on the year. Notes: Lance Thompson went without a hit for the entire doubleheader, only the second time this year he has gone back-to-back games without a hit. He remains three hits shy of moving into third place on the all-time Penn State hits list¡.Penn State¡¯s place in the race for a Big Ten Tournament spot will not be determined until all of the games in the Big Ten have been completed today.
