Wyner Complete Game Leads Nittany Lions Past Buckeyes 3-2 in Game One
Columbus, Ohio ¨C For the second straight game, it was the team that had the most hits that lost. Just as Penn State had outhit Ohio State last night but lost, in Saturday¡¯s first game of the doubleheader, it was the Buckeyes that outhit the Nittany Lions 5-4, but Penn State hung on for a 3-2 win behind the complete game effort of Mark Wyner. Penn State kept its Big Ten Tournament hopes alive with the win, its first over Ohio State in its last six games with the Buckeyes. The sophomore right-hander pitched his third straight complete game, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out four and walking three to pick up his third win of the season. He allowed single runs in the sixth and seventh innings but was able to set down the side in both innings without any further damage to preserve the win. The Nittany Lions scored all of their runs in the first and second innings. Penn State benefited from an Ohio State error in the first to take a 1-0 lead on an unearned run. With Matt Cavagnaro on first after a one-out walk, Lance Thompson¡¯s fly ball to right was overplayed by right fielder Wes Schirtzinger, who came in to far and had to go off his glove and over his head for a two-base error. After the second out of the inning, Aaron Greenfield singled in Cavagnaro. Thompson was held at third but Greenfield got in a rundown between first and second and was tagged out for the third out of the inning. Ohio State starter Cory Luebke had problems with his control in the second and the Nittany Lions benefited by scoring a pair of runs on a two-out single. With one out, Luebke walked the bases loaded. He then struck out Scott Gaffney but Cavagnaro came through with a two-out single through the left side to score two runs and make it 3-0. Luebke settled down after the second inning and retired a string of 11 straight Nittany Lions hitters prior to issuing a one-out walk to Greenfield in the sixth. He got a double play to end the inning with the next hitter, however. Wyner, meanwhile, allowed baserunners in four of the first five innings, but kept the Buckeyes off the scoreboard until the sixth, getting an inning-ending double play ball in both the fourth and fifth innings. In the sixth, he issued a leadoff walk to Jacob Howell. He was sacrificed to second and then with two outs, Ronnie Bourquin singled him home before the Buckeyes were set down with the score 3-1. The Nittany Lions had two one-out hits in the top of the seventh, a single by Rick Marlin and a double by Travis Laird, but were unable to score as Luebke worked his way out of the jam without allowing any more runs. Luebke also pitched a complete game. In the bottom of the seventh, Jason Zoeller lined a one-out solo home run to right field to cut the lead to 3-2 but Wyner didn¡¯t let it phase him, getting the final two outs on a lineout to second and a fly ball to right to end the game. Notes: Laird¡¯s double in the top of the seventh was his first extra-base hit of the year¡.Penn State¡¯s last win over Ohio State came on May 9, 2004, when they swept a doubleheader¡.Wyner¡¯s last win before today came in PSU¡¯s first Big Ten series of the year back on April 1 at Minnesota.
