Penn State Baseball Announces 2004 Team Awards

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (May 20, 2004) The Penn State baseball team recently held its annual team banquet and announced its four major team award winners.

Junior Michael Milliron (DuBois, Pa.) was named the F. Joseph Bedenk Award winner as the team¡¯s most valuable member. He was also given the Ed Drapcho Award as the team¡¯s most improved player.

Milliron has solidified his starting spot at shortstop .328 batting average, two home runs and 19 RBI. He is second in the Big Ten in walks (34),seventh in on-base percentage (.436) and fifth in runs scored (42). He is fielding at a .965 clip with 144 assists.

Senior Aaron Tressler (Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa.) won the team¡¯s Charles Medlar Award as the team¡¯s most outstanding pitcher. Tressler is 4-2 on the season with 1 save, 53 strikeouts and a 3.45 ERA in 57.1 innings. He is ninth in the Big Ten in ERA, 10th in opposing batting average (.249) and seventh in batters struck out looking (25).

Junior Matt Carroll (Philadelphia, Pa.) walked away with the Shorty Stoner Award in recognition of his outstanding academic achievements. Carroll, a Speech Communication major, has also performed well on the mound with 11 strikeouts and a 2.70 ERA in 13.1 innings over seven appearances.

The Nittany Lions (27-24, 16-12 Big Ten) currently sit in a fourth place tie in the Big Ten standings with one weekend to go. Penn State, which has already clinched a spot in the conference tournament, will play its last four games Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Michigan.

The Big Ten Tournament will be held May 26-30 at the site of the regular season champion.
