Three Penn State Baseball Players Named to All-Big Ten Team
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (May 20, 2003) - It was announced by the Big Ten Tuesday that Penn State baseball players senior Wes Reohr (Mechanicsburg, Pa.), junior Jim Farrell (Harleysville, Pa.) and sophomore Clint Eury (Butler, Pa.) were named to the All-Big Ten Third Team for their efforts on the field this season.
Reohr, an All-American Third Team selection in 2002, served as one of the team's tri-captains this season after being named the Ed Drapcho Award winner as the team's most improved player last season. He was named to the All-Big Ten third team as an outfielder. Reohr led the team back to the Big Ten Tournament, which begins Wednesday, for the first time since 2001 with a .318 average, 11 home runs and 41 RBI. He was the only Nittany Lion to start all 52 games this season and he set career highs in at-bats (195), doubles (14), triples (2), homers (11) RBI (41), walks (22) and stolen bases (6). Reohr was named the Big Ten's Player of the Week on Apr. 28, he was also named to the Verizon Academic All-District II second team this season and he received the F. Joseph Bedenk Award as the team's most valuable member. Farrell was a pleasant surprise in his first season playing for Penn State after transferring from Otero Junior College in Colorado. He was named as a Big Ten Third Team pitcher after posting a 6-3 record with 53 strikeouts and a 3.80 ERA in 64.0 innings pitched. His six wins, 53 strikeouts and 64 innings all led the team. He also led the team in appearances with 14. He was also named the Big Ten's co-Pitcher of the Week Mar. 24 and he received the Charles Medlar Award as the team's most outstanding pitcher this season. Eury has been the Nittany Lions' starting first baseman the past two seasons, but he emerged as one of the Big Ten's best closers mid-way through the season and earned a spot on the All-Big Ten Third Team as a relief pitcher. He appeared in 11 games as a closer and went on to a 4-0 record with three saves, 18 strikeouts and a minute 0.43 ERA in 21.0 innings pitched. His 0.43 ERA ranks best in Penn State's 128-year history for a single-season for pitchers with at least 20 innings pitched. His 4.71 hits allowed per nine inngs ranks third-best in Penn State history. Eury currently has a 15 inning scoreless streak alive and he has been stellar in Big Ten games. He has given up just 10 hits, struck out 14 and has not allowed a run in 17.1 innings. All four wins and all three saves have come in conference play. Minnesota, the conference's regular season champion and tournament host, took three of the four individual honors. Second baseman Luke Appert repeated as the Big Ten Player of the Year, pitcher Glen Perkins was Freshman of the Year and John Anderson was named Coach of the Year for the second straight year. Ohio State's Scott Lewis, one of 12 semifinalists for the 2003 Rotary Smith Award, was named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Year. The Rotary Smith Award is given annually to the NCAA Division I baseball player of the year. Fourth-seeded Penn State, which is 26-26 overall and 17-15 in the Big Ten, will play No. 5 Northwestern in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament 1:05 p.m. Wednesday at Siebert Field in Minneapolis, Minn.
