Seven Lions Selected To All-Big Ten Baseball Team
Campo Named Player of the Year
STATE COLLEGE, Pa.; May 17, 2000 -- Capping a year where it led the conference and nation in offensive production and won a school-record 38 games, Penn State had seven players named to the All-Big Ten Baseball teams. The Lions led all schools with four first-team selections, including senior Michael Campo who was named the Player of the Year. Senior Shawn Fagan, junior Pete Yodis and sophomore Chris Wright also were first-team selections. Juniors Chris Netwall and Dan McCall were named to the second team, while senior Eric Spadt was the lone third team selection. Campo leads the Big Ten in batting average (.441), hits (94), runs (71) and triples (5) and is second in doubles (20) and total bases (139). In conference games, he hit a league-leading .443 with 47 hits and 18 RBIs, which were also tops in the Big Ten. The Absecon, N.J., product is in the midst of a 31-game hitting streak, which is the longest active streak in the NCAA. After starting his career as the 1997 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Campo caps off his career as the first Penn Stater to earn Player-of-the-Year honors. If Campo isn't leading the offensive category, chances are it's Fagan. The Levittown, N.Y., third baseman leads the Big Ten in homers (15), RBIs (75), total bases (145) and slugging percentage (.732). He is second in batting (.404), runs (66) and hits (80). He was a second-team selection in 1998 and third team in 1999. After leading the Big Ten in strikeouts most of the season, Yodis earned his first all-Big Ten honor. He is 6-3 with a 3.83 ERA. The Buckingham, Pa., product ranks among the conference leaders in opponent batting average (fourth, .238), inning pitched (fourth, 91.2), strikeouts (third, 80) and strikeouts looking (third, 24). Wright's recent move to rightfield has already grabbed the coaches' attention where he brings solid offense and defense. At the plate, the sophomore leads the league in doubles (23), is third in slugging percentage (.672) and fifth in RBIs (56) and total bases (117). The State College, Pa. product also is among the leaders in batting average (sixth, .379) and runs scored (tied-ninth, 45). The reigning Big Ten Player of the Week, Netwall's .373 batting average ranks seventh in the league and his 15 base runners caught stealing is fifth. A candidate for the Johnny Bench Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award, the Allentown, Pa. product was named second team for the second straight year. Because of injuries, McCall wasn't even sure that he would be able to pitch this year. But since his return, he has dominated from the mound where he is 5-0 with a 2.44 ERA. The Boalsburg, Pa., native struck out a career-high 12 at Northwestern last weekend to lead the Lions to a 6-3 win over the Wildcats. A native of Northampton, Pa., Spadt has been an outstanding defensive second baseman, but can also get the bat swinging. His nine homers are sixth in the league, while he is also ranked eighth in runs scored (47) and seventh in slugging percentage (.595). This is the first time he has been honored. Penn State's seven honorees are its most since having 10 when it won the Big Ten title. The Lions were second only to Illinois (eight) in total players honored. Regular-season champion Minnesota also had seven. No. 2 seeded Penn State (38-14) will begin its run for the Big Ten Tournament title at approximately 4:30 p.m. (ET) today with a first-round game against the fifth-seeded Ohio State Buckeyes in Minneapolis, Minn. The tournament is double elimination. TotalSports will make all Big Ten tournament games available via the internet: www.BigTenChampionships.com. 2000 ALL-BIG TEN BASEBALL TEAMS
