Baseball Plays at Villanova in Final Non-Conference Game of the Year

Game Notes

University Park, Pa.; May 15, 2006 - While Penn State has some very important Big Ten games this upcoming weekend at Ohio State, the Nittany Lions first will look to close out their non-conference schedule on a high note this year as Penn State travels to Villanova to take on the Wildcats on Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.

The Nittany Lions will also look to make it a clean sweep of in-state competition this year, as this will Penn State's fifth and final game against teams from Pennsylvania. The Nittany Lions are 4-0 against PA teams this year, having defeated Lehigh, Pittsburgh, Duquesne, and Bucknell.

Villanova enters Tuesday's game with a 26-24 overall record. Penn State leads the all-time series with the Wildcats 31-25 but Villanova has won the last three meetings, which came in each of the last three seasons.

David Bumstead will get the starting nod for the Nittany Lions. He has not appeared in a game since a relief stint vs. Duquesne on April 12. He has started one game this year. Also expected to see some time on the mound in relief are Paul Hawkins, Scott Kelley, Steve Cline, and Aaron Markowitz.

On the receiving end of whichever pitcher is throwing will most likely be senior catcher Aaron Greenfield, who is a native of Villanova. However the Nittany Lions end the season as a team, Greenfield as an individual is in the process of ending his career on a very high note, as he is hitting .434 (23-for-53) in his last 17 games. He went 8-for-13 (.615) in the Michigan series.
