EAST LANSING, Mich. (May 15, 2005) 每 Junior Alan Stidfole (New Bloomfield, Pa.) pitched eight strong innings, and senior Clint Eury (Butler, Pa.) got out of a jam in the ninth inning to help the Penn State baseball team defeat Michigan State 3-2 Sunday at Kobs Field.

The Nittany Lions remain in contention for a Big Ten playoff spot after improving to 27-23 overall, and 12-16 in the Big Ten.

Penn State will host a midweek, non-conference game against Villanova 3 p.m. Tuesday at Beaver Field. That game can be heard live on ESPN Radio WMAJ 1450 AM, and a link to listen will be available at www.GoPSUsports.com.

Stidfole went eight-plus innings, facing two batters in the ninth. He gave up two unearned runs on 11 hits. He struck out seven and didn*t walk a batter. Freshman James Spinelli (Berwyn, Pa.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI double, and senior Michael Milliron (DuBois, Pa.) extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a single.

A leadoff double by E.J. Daws and an infield single by Ryan Sontag chased Stidfole from the game. Sontag then stole second base and Spinelli*s throw then went into centerfield, allowing Daws to score, and Sontag to move to third with no outs. Eury then got a groundout, a line out and a deep fly ball to secure the win, and his fifth save of the season.

A single by Troy Krider, a Penn State error, and an RBI single by Ryan Basham gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

The Nittany Lions broke through with three runs in the second inning to take a 3-1 lead with the help of two Michigan State errors. Junior Colin Runt (State College, Pa.) led off with a walk, and scored after an error and an RBI groundout by junior Derrick Barr (So. Williamsport, Pa.). Sophomore Travis Laird (Conneaut Lake, Pa.), who reached on the previous error, scored on a two-out RBI double by freshman James Spinelli. Spinelli came around to score when Milliron reached on an error.

Stidfole ran into trouble in the fifth inning. He put runners on first and third with just one out and Michigan State home run leaders Adam Tripp and Ryan Basham coming up. But Stidfole struck both out to get out of the jam.

Stidfole did it again in the seventh inning. The Spartans had runners on first and third with one out and got Troy Krider to ground into a fielder*s choice with third baseman Runt forcing out E.J. Daws at the plate. Stidfole then caught Tripp looking to end the threat.
