State College, Pa., May 15, 2002 - Virginia erupted for 12 runs on 19 hits to roll to a convincing 12-4 victory in game one but fell victim to a two-out seventh inning rally by the Nittany Lions as Penn State tripped up Virginia 12-11 in the nightcap.
In game one, Virginia drew first blood thanks to a two-run homer by Matt Street off Nittany Lion starter Josh Palm (Conneaut Lake, Pa.) to give the Cavaliers a 2-0. Virginia tacked on another run in the first when Dan Street tagged from third on Mark Reynolds sac fly to shallow right. The Cavaliers scored their fourth and fifth runs of the first on a two-out single up the middle by Kyle Werman. When it was all said and done, Virginia held a 5-0 lead after just a half inning of play. Dan Street delivered a one out single to left center to score David Stone from third to extend the Virginia lead to 6-0. The single by Street also knocked Palm out of the contest after just 1.1 innings of work. Virginia scored its seventh run and eighth runs of the contest after Reynolds and Matt Sweet hit back-to-back homers off Penn State reliever Jared Hopewell (Watsontown, Pa.). Werman poked a single just over third to score Andrew Riesenfeld, who doubled earlier in the inning, to extend the Virginia lead to 9-0. Street knocked Hopewell out of the game after drilling his third hit of the game, a double to left that scored two runs to give Virginia an 11-0 advantage. Penn State finally got to Virginia starter Canon Hickman in the bottom of the fifth when Mike Milliron (Dubois, Pa.) launched a three-run homer to left to make the score 11-3. After Virginia tacked on a run in the top of the sixth, Chris Wright (State College, Pa.) drilled his sixth homer of the season, a solo shot to left center, to make it 12-4 in favor of Virginia. Palm was hung with the loss as he dropped to 2-4 on the season after allowing six runs in just 1.1 innings, while Hickman improved to 5-5 with the win for Virginia. In game two, Virginia got on the board in the first when Dan Street sac bunted Shawn McClearly in from third to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead. The Nittany Lions answered in their half of the first when Adam Warchal (Nanticoke, Pa.) plated Wes Reohr (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) with a double to center to knot the game at one. Wright followed a single through the left side that scored Warchal from second to give Penn State its first lead of the day. The Nittany Lions pushed their lead to 3-1 when Matt Harter (State College, Pa.) hit a sac fly to right that scored Wright from third. Chris Sweet picked up where he left off in game one when he drilled an Arin Gelletly (Dayton, Md.) offering over the wall in left center to cut the Nittany Lion lead to 3-2. Virginia tied the contest at three when McClearly delivered a RBI single that scored Werman from second. Penn State regained the lead in the bottom of the second after Reohr tripled to right center to score John Richmond (Pittsburgh, Pa.). Richmond extended the Penn State lead to two runs in the bottom of third when delivered a single through the left side to score Harter from second. Mark Reynolds put Virginia back on top in the fourth when he deposited a 2-2 offering by Mark Fagersten (Sparta, N.J.) over the wall in left center for a three-run homer, his second of the day. David Stone pushed the Cavalier lead to two in the fifth after drilling a run-scoring single to center to make it 7-5 in favor of Virginia. Penn State strung three singles together in the bottom of the fifth, which was highlighted by an RBI single off the bat of Matt Lindert (Pensacola, Fla.), to cut the Virginia lead to two runs. After Virginia tacked on a run in the sixth, Mike DeRenzo (Murrysville, Pa.) started the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer to left. After Warchal tripled down the right field line, Wright followed with a double down the third base line to cut the Virginia lead to one run. Harter followed by pushing the game tying run across the plate when he delivered a single up the middle off Virginia reliever Alan Zimmerer to knot the game at nine. Willie Melendez (Cayey, P.R.) gave the Nittany Lions the lead when executed a perfect squeeze bunt that allowed Harter to score from third. Penn State rallied for two runs in its last at bat with two outs when Clint Eury (Butler, Pa.) delivered a two-out single down the third base line to give the Nittany Lions the dramatic 12-11 win. Tyler Wingerd (Frederick, Md.), who entered the game in the top of the seventh with the Nittany Lions clinging to a 10-9 lead, earned the win despite allowing two runs on two hits. Wingerd improved to 4-3 on the season with the loss. Zimmerer fell to 1-2 in the loss for Virginia. Following the doubleheader split , Penn State fell to 23-26 on the season while Virginia dropped to 25-27. Penn State will wrap up its regular season with a critical four-game Big Ten series with Michigan State beginning on Friday at 2:00 p.m., at Beaver Field.
