Penn State Alum Harry "ZIP" Rogers Initiates Endowment For Dennie L. DeWitt Memorial Scholarship

State College, Pa., May 16, 2002 Former Penn State baseball player Harry “Zip” Rogers and his family have announced they will initiate the endowment of a Penn State baseball scholarship in the name of former Nittany Lion teammate Dennie L. DeWitt.

The Rogers Family’s contribution of $25,000 will fund the “Dennie L. DeWitt Memorial Baseball Scholarship” which will go to assist a member of the Penn State baseball team.

“Time passes so quickly that we rarely take the time to pause and reflect on little events that make large impacts on our lives,” Rogers said. “Ruth and Dennie DeWitt as well as close friends, teammates and the University have impacted my life. This is a proud moment for me to be able to share with them.”

“The scholarship is not an ending but simply a beginning in an effort to show our support for Coach Joe Hindelang and the Penn State Baseball program as well as to honor a good friend who we all miss deeply.”

Harry “Zip” Rogers and his wife Karen currently reside in Paoli, Pa., with their two children, Ashley and Matty. Mr. Rogers, a 1972 graduate of Penn State, is the Vice President of Finance/Administration for Irwin & Leighton, Inc. in King of Prussia, Pa.

Dennie DeWitt was a member of the Penn State baseball team from 1970-73 and recorded .279 career batting average in 262 at bats. DeWitt was a member of four consecutive winning teams under then Nittany Lion skipper Chuck Medlar. He led Penn State in batting average during the 1973 season while notching a career-best .343 clip.

Rogers, who was a teammate of DeWitt’s from 1970-72, led the Nittany Lions in batting average (.375) and doubles (6) in 1972.

DeWitt’s mother, Ruth DeWitt, sister, Gail Summers and brother, Cleve DeWitt, will be in attendance for Saturday’s doubleheader between Penn State and Michigan State at Beaver Field along with other close friends of the family.
