STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Penn State baseball players Chris Netwall (Allentown, Pa.) and Mike DeRenzo (Murrysville, Pa.) were named to the Verizon Academic All-District 2 squad, which is selected by the College Organization of Sports Information Directors (CoSIDA). Penn State was one of two schools to place multiple players on the All-District 2 first team along with St. Joseph's, who placed three players on the squad. Netwall, who earned second team All-Big Ten status in 2000, ranks second on the Penn State career list in home runs (34) and is third all-time in school annals with 135 RBI. The catcher also has tallied 211 hits during his tenure at Penn State, fourth-most all-time and currently boasts a .311 batting average along with six home runs and 27 RBI. Netwall currently maintains a 3.27 GPA while majoring in mechanical engineering. DeRenzo has enjoyed a breakthrough season after redshirting in 2000. The sophomore second baseman leads the squad and ranks third in the Big Ten with a .390 batting average. He also sports the team's highest on-base percentage at .472. DeRenzo boasts a 3.68 GPA in computer engineering. Netwall and DeRenzo, along with the other nine members of the District 2 first team will be eligible for the Verizon Academic All-America baseball team, which will be announced on Tuesday, June 5. Penn State wraps up the 2001 regular season this weekend as it hosts Michigan State in a four game series on May 11-13 at Beaver Field.
