Bloomington, Indiana, May 5, 2002 Penn State rallied from a two-run deficit thanks to a dramatic three-run homer by Wes Reohr (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) to defeat Indiana 6-4 in game one and kept the momentum rolling in the second game as it posted back-to-back two run innings to defeat the Hoosiers 6-2 in the second contest to complete the double header sweep.

With the wins, Penn State improved to 20-23 on the season and 9-13 in league play while Indiana fell to 29-14 and 10-10 in the Big Ten.

Indiana’s Joe Kemp put the Hoosiers on the board in the bottom of the second after he deposited an Aaron Tressler (State College, Pa.) offering over the fence in right to give Indiana a 1-0 lead early on.

After stringing together a pair of singles to start the bottom of third, Eric Blakeley drove in the Hoosiers second run of the contest with a sac fly to right. Mark Calkins followed with a double to the gap in left center to plate Jay Brant from third and give Indiana a 3-0 advantage.

The Nittany Lions finally solved Indiana starter Zach Otte in the fourth after Willie Melendez (Cayey, P.R.) drilled a single to left that scored Clint Eury (Butler, Pa.) from second to cut the Hoosier lead to two runs.

Penn State capitalized on a Hoosier defensive lapse in the fifth to cut the Indiana lead to one after Reohr scored from second when Joe Kemp dropped Matt Harter’s (Centre Hall, Pa.) fly ball in right to make it 3-2 Hoosiers.

The Hoosiers responded in the bottom of the fifth with a run after Vasili Spanos knocked Kennard Jones in from third with a double to left center to push the Indiana lead back to two runs.

John Ruhf (Bethlehem, Pa.) brought Penn State to within a run in the sixth with an RBI single to left that scored Melendez from second. After Mike DeRenzo (Murrysville, Pa.) singled to left, Reohr gave the Nittany Lions its first lead of the game when greeted Indiana reliever Adam Pegg with a three-run homer to left, his team-leading eighth of the season, to put Penn State in front 6-4.

Mike Watson (Altoona, Pa.), who came on in relief of Tressler in the sixth, pulled the plug on the upstart Hoosier offense as he registered the final six outs of the contest to pick up his first save of the season. Tressler was credited with his fourth win of the season after scattering seven hits in five innings of work, as he improved to 4-2 overall.

Reohr and Melendez each garnered two hit days for the Nittany Lions in the victory as Reohr went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI and two runs scored. Melendez posted a 2-for-3 day as well with an RBI and a runs scored.

In game two, the Hoosiers got off to a good start against Nittany Lion starter Josh Palm (Conneaut Lake, Pa.) after clean-up man Vasili Spanos drove a single into left field to score Kennard Jones from third to give Indiana a 1-0 lead early on.

After Mike Milliron (Dubois, Pa.) walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch, DeRenzo delivered an RBI double down the third base line to score Milliron from second and knot the game at one.

The Nittany Lions took their first lead of the contest in the fourth, when Arin Gelletly (Dayton, Md.) belted a solo homer to center, the first of his young Penn State career, to put the Nittany Lions up 2-1.

Penn State extended its lead to three runs in the top of the fifth thanks to RBI hits by Adam Warchal (Nanticoke, Pa.) and Chris Wright (State College, Pa.) to take a 4-1 advantage over the Hoosiers.

Indiana trimmed the Nittany Lion lead to two runs in the bottom of the fifth after Kennard Jones scored from third on a wild pitch by Gelletly, who came on in relief of Palm in the fourth inning.

Penn State tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth after Gelletly scored from third on Milliron’s groundout to third. Melendez, who doubled earlier in the inning, was later scored on DeRenzo’s sacrifice bunt to increase the Nittany Lion lead to four runs.

The lead would stick for the Nittany Lions as they went to on to defeat Indiana 6-2 in the second contest to complete the double header sweep. Gelletly, who was coming off a 1-0 shutout last weekend against Michigan, earned his second win of the season in relief as he limited Indiana to just one run while scattering three hits over the final four innings. With the win the freshman right-hander improved to 2-1 on the season with the win.

Penn State will wrap up its four game series with Indiana tomorrow afternoon when it takes on the Hoosiers in a single nine-inning contest beginning at 3 p.m. (E.T.) at IU’s Sembower Field.
