Penn State Baseball Skipper Joe Hindelang Hospitalized
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Penn State head baseball coach Joe Hindelang was hospitalized early Monday evening after complaining of nausea and generally feeling ill. While all current tests were negative, Hindelang is expected to remain hospitalized through Wednesday for observation and further tests. He could be released as early as Wednesday afternoon. Penn State pitching coach Randy Ford will be the acting head coach for Penn State's non-conference game on Wed., April 18 vs. St. Bonaventure at Beaver Field. Hindelang's status for the team's four-game Big Ten Conference series at Ohio State this weekend is uncertain. Hindelang is in his 11th season as head coach of the Nittany Lions. His Penn State record is 298-260-2, a winning percentage of .534. The 2000 Lions earned the program's first NCAA berth since 1976 and won the Upper Montclair Regional before advancing to the first Super Regional in the program's history. His 1996 team was the Big Ten regular season champion. Hindelang took over the Penn State program in 1991 after a highly-successful stint as head coach at Lafayette. Prior to coaching at Lafayette, Hindelang was the head coach at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science for five years. A 1967 Temple graduate, Hindelang lettered three years in baseball and two in basketball for the Owls. He was a key reserve on Temple's 1966 National Invitation Tournament quarterfinal basketball team and a draft selection by the New York Yankees as a pitcher.
