Penn State women¡¯s cross country takes fourth at NCAA Region II Meet

LOCK HAVEN, PA., NOV. 15, 2003- The No. 17 ranked Penn State women¡¯s cross country took fourth today at the NCAA Region II Meet hosted by Bucknell University at Lock Haven University¡¯s West Branch Cross Country Course.

The defending champion No. 16 ranked Georgetown Hoyas took home the title once again scoring 56 points. Princeton, ranked No. 14 took second place with 78 points. The No. 21 ranked Villanova team took third place with 98 points. Penn State scored

Junior Molly Landreth (Newburyport, Mass.) finished fourth place in a time of 20:09. Landreth, Penn State¡¯s top runner all season was named Big Ten Cross Country Athlete of the Week twice in the 2003 season and broke a Penn State Blue/White Course record at the Penn State National on Oct. 18.

Junior Michelle Wale (Pine Bush, N.Y.) was the Nittany Lions next runner across the line coming in at 18th with a time of 21:16. Wale was Penn State¡¯s top runner in 2001 advancing to the NCAA Championships and finishing 134th.

Rounding out the top 20 for the Nittany Lions was junior Chelsea Lenge (West Hartford, Conn.) coming in at 20th with a time of 21:18.

Sophomore Jenny Stevens (Hookset, N.H.) took 30th in a time of 21:32. Stevens was named to the second team All-Big Ten team after placing 10th at the Big Ten Championships on Nov. 2. Senior Tara Johnson (Glenolden, Pa.) finished 32nd in a time of 21:39 and sophomore Tracey Brauksieck (Homer, N.Y.), last year¡¯s highest placer at the Regional Meet took 36th in a time of 21:49.

Senior Maureen Thomas (Bethlehem, Pa.), one of the Nittany Lion¡¯s co-captains, took 37th in a time of 21:49.

The top two teams, Georgetown and Princeton, automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships to be held on Nov. 24 in Waterloo, Iowa. Teams can then be chosen as at-large selections based on their season records. The top four individuals that are not on one of the teams that have automatically qualified or have been chosen at-large and also placed in the top 15 in the Regional are then also selected to compete in the Championships.
