STATE COLLEGE, PA., NOV. 10. 2003- The No. 17 ranked Penn State women¡¯s cross country team will compete in the final race before the NCAA Championships this weekend. The NCAA Region II Championships are being hosted by Bucknell University and ran on Lock Haven University¡¯s West Branch Cross Country Course.

Four other nationally ranked teams will also be featured in the competition field. The No. 16 ranked Georgetown Hoyas and the No. 21 ranked Villanova team are the top two returning teams from last year¡¯s race. The No. 14 ranked Princeton Tigers finished fifth last year and the No. 17 ranked Penn State Nittany Lions finished third in 2002.

Junior Molly Landreth goes into the race as Penn State¡¯s top runner coming off a fourth place finish and All-Big Ten first team selection at the Big Ten Championships Nov 2. Landreth was chosen as Big Ten Cross Country Athlete of the Week twice by the conference this season and won the Penn State Spiked Shoe. Landreth also broke a Penn State Blue/White Course time at the Penn State National on Sept. 18.

Sophomore Tracey Brauksieck was the Nittany Lions¡¯ top runner at last year¡¯s regional race finishing second, the highest finish for a Penn State women¡¯s cross country runner since the Lions joined the Big Ten.

The top two teams that finish in the race will automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships to be held on Nov. 24 in Waterloo, Iowa. Teams can then be chosen as at-large selections based on their season records. The top four individuals that are not on one of the teams that have automatically qualified or have been chosen at-large and also placed in the top 15 in the Regional are then also selected to compete in the Championships.

The women¡¯s 6K race is set to start at 12:15 p.m. on Saturday and the awards ceremony will begin at approximately 1:30 p.m. in Lock Haven University¡¯s Thomas Fieldhouse.
