STATE COLLEGE, PA., NOV. 10, 2003- The Penn State men¡¯s cross country will compete in the NCAA Region II Championships this weekend on Lock Haven University¡¯s West Branch Cross Country Course. The meet is being hosted by Bucknell University.

The Nittany Lions are looking to improve upon last year¡¯s 14th place finish. Sophomore Dan Mazzocco goes into the race as Penn State¡¯s top runner after winning both home meets, being chosen as Big Ten Cross Country Athlete of the Week twice and coming in fourth at the Big Ten Championships on Nov 2.

Other competition includes last year¡¯s winner, No. 16 ranked Villanova and senior runner Jon Fasulo who just won a Big East Conference title on Oct. 31 with a time of 24:25. The No. 9 ranked Georgetown Hoyas, last year¡¯s second place team, are just coming off a Big East Conference team title where all five of their scorers placed in the top ten. Villanova and Georgetown are the only two ranked teams competing.

The top two teams that finish in the race will automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships to be held on Nov. 24 in Waterloo, Iowa. Teams can then be chosen as at-large selections based on their season records. The top four individuals that are not on one of the teams that have automatically qualified or have been chosen at-large and also placed in the top 15 in the Regional are then also selected to compete in the Championships.

The men¡¯s 10K race is set to start at 11:00 a.m. and the awards ceremony will begin at approximately 1:30 p.m. in Lock Haven University¡¯s Thomas Fieldhouse.
