University Park, PA (Nov. 10, 2001) -- For the second consecutive season, the Penn State men’s cross country team’s hopes of a berth in the NCAA National Championships came up just short. The Nittany Lions finished fifth out of 29 teams with 143 points in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships. The race was held on the Goodman Campus of Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. Mid-Atlantic rivals Villanova (75 points) and Georgetown (90 points) took first and second respectively to earn a spot in the national championships on Nov. 19 in Greenville, SC.

Three Nittany Lion runners finished in the top 20. All-Big Ten performer Steve Walsh (senior/Blue Bell, Pa.) was Penn State’s highest finisher with a 17th place performance in a time of 31:17.87. Seniors John McGrorey (West Chester, Pa.) and Gregg Davis (Council Rock, Pa.) followed right behind Walsh in 18th and 19 place. McGrorey’s finishing time was 31:18.35, while Davis’ was 31:19.42.
